What is ISTQB Foundation Level?

Summary

ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level, is the entry-level certification in the ISTQB Certified Tester scheme. It is based on the ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 and covers core software testing vocabulary, principles, activities, techniques, and test management concepts. It is aimed at anyone involved in software testing, and also at anyone who simply wants a working understanding of how software testing is done.

Who it is for

The syllabus describes the Foundation Level as aimed at people in roles such as testers, test analysts, test engineers, test consultants, test managers, software developers, and other development team members. It is also described as appropriate for people who want a basic understanding of software testing without necessarily working as a tester day to day, including project managers, quality managers, product owners, software development managers, business analysts, IT directors, and management consultants.

In practice, this means the certification is not written only for people who already work in dedicated testing roles. Someone coming from a different background, such as development, business analysis, project management, or a non-technical role entirely, can use the syllabus as a structured introduction to testing concepts and vocabulary.

What it covers

The syllabus covers six examinable chapters: Fundamentals of Testing, Testing Throughout the Software Development Lifecycle, Static Testing, Test Analysis and Design, Managing the Test Activities, and Test Tools. Together these chapters introduce the vocabulary and concepts behind why testing matters, how testing fits into different ways of building software, how to design test cases using a range of techniques, how test activities are planned and managed, and how tools support testing.

What a certified tester can do

The syllabus defines 14 business outcomes that describe what someone who has achieved the Foundation Level certification should be able to do. These include understanding what testing is and why it is beneficial, understanding fundamental testing concepts, identifying the right test approach and activities for a given context, assessing and improving the quality of documentation, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of testing, aligning the test process with the software development lifecycle, understanding test management principles, writing and communicating clear defect reports, understanding the factors that influence testing priorities and effort, working as part of a cross-functional team, understanding the risks and benefits of test automation, identifying essential testing skills, understanding the impact of risk on testing, and reporting effectively on test progress and quality.

How it fits into the wider ISTQB scheme

The Foundation Level is a prerequisite for the other certifications in the ISTQB Core stream that require it. After achieving the Foundation Level, candidates can pursue the Core Advanced Level certifications (Test Analyst, Technical Test Analyst, and Test Manager), and beyond that, Expert Level certifications in areas like test management or improving the test process. The ISTQB scheme also includes an Agile stream, with certifications such as Agile Technical Tester, and a Specialist stream covering areas like test automation, AI testing, performance testing, security testing, and usability testing, among others.

Exam basis

The exam is based directly on the syllabus. The current version is Foundation Level v4.0.1, an errata release from September 2024 of the general v4.0 syllabus released in April 2023. The previous version, Foundation Level v3.1, was sunset for English language exams in May 2024.
